Being GBTQ and dealing with trolls

I’m no stranger to a troll on facebook or any other platform, and as my business grows on social media I am faced more and more with people who wish to engage in what I can only call disgusting and disrespectful behaviour.

As a community, we have always faced an issue of bullying and aggression, and people unwilling to understand that they have more in common with us than they realise.

I will be honest, I used to get involved in the back and forth, the angry responses, in an effort to make myself feel better.

I will say, however, that time and time again, that the way to take to wind out of their sails is to simply ignore them. Starve them of the thing they want the most, attention!

The moment you show that it has affected you, they have you over a barrel, and exactly where they want you.

There is nothing wrong with standing up for yourself and fighting for your rights, this I’m not arguing. We wouldn't be where we are today had it not been for the brave men and women who fought for us!

It's important to remember that by engaging you’re giving them ammunition, you’re giving them the ability to say “look aren’t these people awful, look at the way they treated ME, they've just proved everything I thought of them" and we've reinforced their misguided view of us.

As an accepting and supportive group, I want us to be known for our ability to say a mental “F*** you, you don’t know me” and move on, because otherwise, we're no better than our enemy.

Fire has never fought fire and worked.

We must ignore those who don't understand, we will not change their minds, we must ignore those who wish to fight us because we are strong and we have no need to prove it.

The energy wasted on those that are only out to fight you is energy you can better spend on our brothers, on our community, and those that accept us.

We must remain compassionate and empathic, we must engage with those who want to understand us, who can see our shared commonalities. For it is those that turn the tide, it is those that, who, through time change the collective consciousness.

My challenge for you is to find a new way. To not engage with trolls or people who are overly emotional about who we are, you will not change their minds.

We will work smarter not harder. Focus on doing what we can where we can to show that WE, together will not be shaken.

WE together will not back down, but we will do it through kindness, compassion and empathy!

I want to leave you with a video recently shared within the group, I think it will explain what I mean better than I may have done here.
